Abstract

High mobility of people in cities makes the need for a temporary place to rest become more significant. Hotel is an architectural solution to answer that kind of need. However, in big cities like Jakarta, it is not enough to answer the need for a place to rest only by providing the facility to sleep alone. Hotel costumers in Jakarta demand more services than just sleeping beds. This is implied by the downward trend in the numbers of Room Occupancy Rate (ROR) of non-star lodges, while on the contrary an increase of ROR of star hotels which offer more facilities to their customers. The people of Jakarta who are mostly well educated and have high income can be classified as the bourgeois bohemian (bobo); a term popularized by the American sociologist David Brooks to describe the upper middle class who grew up in the information age. They are characterized as people who have styleconsciousness, an outstanding work ethic, and high ideals. They tend to be utilitarian, philosophical, contemplative, give more attention to details, have a noble mission, favor natural things, varieties, personal approach, appreciate works of art, novelty, and historical values. The specific characteristics of the bobos make them better suited to a boutique hotel compared to other types of hotels. Boutique hotel offers a hospitality services which are uniquely designed to make the guests feel an experience of space that cannot be found anywhere else. Boutique hotel tries to integrate contemporary arts and innovative details in its design that are generally favored by the bobos. Therefore, in this final project I draft a design of a boutique hotel for the bobos in Jakarta.
