The development of Islam in the Middle East led to the type of mosque architecture that manifold, where it affects the formation of space in a mosque. Based on these developments, this type of architecture in Indonesia also have some type of mosque architecture that adopts the Middle East mosque at certain times. Based on this, the question arises as to which pattern affects the architecture of the mosque in Indonesia, which is reviewed by the architectural elements to obtain a useful typology of mosque architecture for the design of the nextmosque. One mosque in Indonesia, which has an important role as a symbol of the independence of Indonesia, the Istiqlal Mosque. One of the things that are unique to this mosque is the scale and proportions of the different buildings of the mosque that impact the formation, space and perception of space in it. Based on the contrast of the Istiqlal Mosque buildings other than the mosque building, the authors chose the Istiqlal Mosque as a sample case study of this research topic. Based on the background and issues of the issues raised, this study has the objective to determine the architectural elements of what is at the Istiqlal Mosque, how the implementation of the architectural elements of the pattern formation in space are related to the scale-building proportions. The questions will be analyzed and compared with some of the mosques in Indonesia and the Middle East to answer regarding architectural patterns which are applied to the Istiqlal mosque. The method used in this study is qualitative methods supported with a literature study, observation, and data analysis based on the theoretical basis for achieving the desired goal. Based on this study, the authors assume that the shape and space at the Istiqlal Mosque adopt Utsmaniah architecture that can be said to fit the circumstances in Indonesia making Masjid Istiqlal Mosque become iconic to this day.
