Abstract

Catholic Church adopted local culture in their liturgical and architectural. The adaptation process is called Inculturation. Inculturation is a new task for Catholic Church since the second Vatican Council. The intention of the church architectural inculturation is for Catholic Church to interact and communicate with the local community. Inculturation in Catholic Church has a very strict rules which made and agreed in KWI presidium meeting in 2003. There are several things that accordance to the universal church rules that cannot be change, for example liturgical ornaments. St. Stefanus Church which is located in Cilandak, Jakarta and Hati Kudus Yesus Church which is located in Ganjuran, Yogyakarta are case studies that show church architectural inculturation that combined with Joglo House. Both of the churches have characteristics of Joglo House, with the same main structure with Joglo House. For the main reference, I choose Bangsal Kencana which located in Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, to be the benchmark of the churches’ forms. Therefore this research is to investigate how architectural elements can connect with each other. This research used two methods which are literature study and analyzing case study. The results of this research are that Hati Kudus Yesus Church in Ganjuran, Yogyakarta and St. Stefanus Church in Cilandak, Jakarta are churches that was inculturated with the Javanese culture that can be seen from the building form, function, and Javanese ornaments as can be seen in Rumah Joglo. Both of churches have adopted The Joglo House form but with a different type of it. In term of function, architectural inculturation present in the spatial organization in St. Stefanus Church which has a centralized organization because of the apse that located right in the middle of the building. Hati Kudus Yesus Church has a linear spatial organization which as in general Catholic Church. Javanese ornaments in both of churches can be seen on both of buildings roof, Tumpang Sari, on building columns, and several attributes on the apse area.
