Abstract

The logical consequence of population growth is the change in a city. Building or previously living environment, then abandoned by the user because it is no longer compatible with the new requirements. So that the building is not dead, is necessary to find an attempt to revive him, namely by adapting the new functionality in old buildings that are not working anymore. This method, which is commonly called the adaptive re-use, many made especially to extend the life of the building and preserve the value - the value of history possessed of a building. The building that will be used in this research is kalibagor sugar mill. The building was chosen because of several reasons. First, the building is a heritage building the Netherlands, where in operation 1939 - 1996, kalibagor sugar factory is a source of livelihood in the area Sokaraja. Second, this factory has a building area measuring 1.5 hectares which makes it have a large volume. The problem is the main topic of this research is a new function what fits on kalibagor sugar mills as well as how to design new functionality. This design, new design pattern on kalibagor sugar factory building. The purpose of this study is to obtain the function, design strategies, and patterns of interaction of new buildings with the old building. The method used in this research is by using the historical way in which the research that will be conducted also studies literature, precedent, and surveys in the field. The analysis result from Pabrik Gula Kalibagor is the new function that will be used as a communal space. These communal space are traditional market, foodcourt, ruin space, and multipurpose space. The strategy from this new function is layer and fragment. The new interaction from the old building to the new building are wraps, insertion, and weaving
